I am a scientist by heart, product developer by necessity, social entrepreneur by chance and community builder by philosophy. I am co-founder and CTO of EyeNetra and its service Blink, co-founder of PUB-Boston and co-founder and board member of the SciBr Foundation. My current goal is to create a suite of interconnected technological innovations that are able to find, measure and correct 2.5 billion people in the world that are today in need for simple eyeglasses and have no idea of their visual dysfunction. This is double the amount of users Facebook has today.  

I work on the triple frontier among optics, computer science and vision science. My work is mostly known for joining insights from computational photography and refractive science into new mass-market diagnostic devices for eye care (NETRA, Netrometer, Netropter, CATRA). I began by creating novel physiologically-based models of human eyes, algorithms for retinal imaging diagnostics and disruptions on eye relaxation and accommodation control procedures. To close the circle, I also elaborated the concept of vision correcting displays, a new way to correct for optical distortions beyond the usual eyewear (TailoredDisplays). These are all connected to EyeNetra's telemecine networks & data science platforms to provide comprehensive solutions to society. These award-winning ideas were patented and published in prestigious academic gatherings such as ACM SIGGRAPH, ARVO, AOA, and OSA Frontiers in Optics.

Most of my patents involve developing a low-cost patient-centric interactive component from the early science. The final products show significant improvements on user experience, allowing for mass-market consumer applications while keeping similar accuracies of clinical tools. Although research is in the essence of my work and the reason for why I am what I am, a significant part of my time is spent on working closely with product, quality, legal and market developers to deliver ground-shaking but sustainable entities, effectively immersing myself from the early science to the final impact.

In my second life, I work with PUBBoston and the SciBr Foundation to inspire, connect and mobilize scientific achievements and innovation development of Brazilians living abroad. I also co-produced the first year of the Science-based YouTube Channel Panorama Brasil Boston. I am an MIT short-term lecturer for executive MBA students and Eye Focus Accelerator mentor. I constantly review papers for ACM SIGGRAPH and others as well as grant applications for NSF and the XPrize Foundation. 

In Brazil, I am known for co-founding one of the largest collaboration platforms for software engineers, reaching 50k portuguese-speaking developers in the early 2000s (JavaFree), and the first portuguese-speaking forum for Ruby developers (RubyOnBr). During my early research days, I created the first 3D game engine for feature phones (M3GE) and the first image-based gesture-tracing glove (IBDG). I founded my first technology company when I was 15 years-old using my parent's " angel " investment, worked full-time on agile software development companies throughout my 5 years in college, and built 11 free software projects in the same time span. Other significant projects that I co-foudned were a credit card payments mobile app (PayDream) and an off-line-activity-engaging social network (Agitter).

I am a recipient of the Silver Thomas Edison Award 2012, NASA Health Innovation Award 2010, the Vodafone Innovation Award 2011, and my research was named as one of the biggest MIT achievements of 2010 by the Provost.

   Hardware prototyping, optics, human eye and user-interaction. I idealized and created the Tailored Displays which was published at the prestigious ACM SIGGRAPH 2012 conference. Meanwhile we continued to work on NETRA and CATRA devices, spreading them through partners in the world. I also developed user-efficient medical record systems (SETRA, SATRA), started an credit card payments mobile app (PayDream) and off-line activity-engaging network (Agitter). 12 months with a CNPq PhD Scholarship.
   
   
3. Oct 2009 - Feb 2011: Visiting PhD Student at MIT - Media Lab
   Hardware prototyping , optics, ophthalmology, human-computer interaction , scientific papers, team leadership and media. I worked with a new equipment for screening and diagnostic of eye conditions using human-computer interaction . I created the award winning technologies NETRA and CATRA, which were published at the prestigious ACM SIGGRAPH. These projects raised more than 600k dollars on research grants, won several competitions, were distributed for more than 29 research centers, and appeared more than 170 times on the worldwide mainstream media. I also worked with ab-initio models to simulate the colors of materials in computer graphics and new equipments for crystallography. 12 months with a CNPq SWE scholarship.

   Research and development in computer graphics, studies on human eye   physiology   / pathology, academic papers and teaching activities. I worked with implementations of geometric algebra, animated impostors with relief mapping, creation and evaluation of interaction devices, bio-physical modelling, parallel processing on the GPU, high dynamic range algorithms, HLSL2GLSL translator, image processing for medicine, ambient occlusion and voxelization, and usability evaluations for Taikodom. 7 months with Microsoft Innovation Center scholarship, 5 months with CNPq Reuni scholarship and 12 months with CNPq PhD Scholarship.
      
5. Aug 2003 – Feb 2006: Software Architect at Progressiva Acessoria e Sistemas LTDA.
   We converted a massive customer-driven Enterprise Resorce Planning from Cobol to Java with 3 people on the team in about 2 years for the largest product design and label printing industry on Latin America. My responsibilities include all the server and desktop infrastructure, components and GUI design / coding. During this work, I developed a text-based reports engine, object-oriented caching systems, interface rules, legacy database integration, and code generators. Direct contact with customers.

   Bringing affordable EyeTests to everyone using a mobile phone. Uncorrected refractive errors (i.e. nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism), presbyopia (age related eye condition) result in lost productivity, lost independence, illiteracy and impoverishment on a massive scale. Many in developing countries go without eye exams and remain unaware that they have a treatable eye condition. Leveraging the ubiquity and advanced hardware of mobile phones, EyeNETRA grew out of collaborative research at the MIT Media Lab and UFRGS Instituto de informática to develop and disseminate hardware apps – affordable and easy-to-use mobile phone attachments that provide recommendation for treatment.

   Líder de Projeto, arquiteto e desenvolvedor. FreeToDo é um portal de acesso rápido a to-do lists pessoais. Feito em JSP e AJAX / Javascript, usa a Google Friend API para salvar um arquivo de to-do por usuário. O arquivo recebe real-time syntax highlighting (CodeMirror) durante a sua edição na web. É o primeiro projeto de to-do list onde o usuário é responsável pela estrutura de sua lista.
   
   
2. Fev 2011 - Fev 2011: ShTweet: Command line twitter client.
   Um conjunto de scripts feitos em ShellScript para acesso ao Twitter sem usar a oAuth. O sistema usa CURL e Perl para simular um browser e realizar chamadas com usuários logados.
      
3. Apr 2009 - Fev 2010: Weblessdoc : Unified offline documentation browser.
   Idealizador e desenvolvedor do projeto. Trata-se de um navegador de documentações off-line para linux. O aplicativo reúne, em uma interface simples, os diferentes estilos de documentação do " / usr / share / doc " a fim de facilitar a programação em ambientes off-line (durante viagens, por exemplo). O software é desenvolvido em Python e QT.

   Líder de Projeto, arquiteto e desenvolvedor. Priki é uma engine de wiki cuja principal característica é o auto relacionamento entre páginas, criando uma rede de navegação. O Priki utiliza editores WYSIWYG para a edição de páginas, rotinas avançadas de segurança, e possui diversas configurações de acesso. Mantenho o servidor do projeto Wiki.com.br: administração do SVN, backups, e demais portais rodando no mesmo servidor. Software desenvolvido em Java com Webwork 2 e Prevayler.
   
   
6. Fev 2005 - Feb 2007: Mobile 3D Game Engine (M3GE)
   Líder de projeto e arquiteto deste motor de jogos 3D para J2ME. O projeto é uma biblioteca que gerencia o rendering 3D, o fluxo do jogo, a carga e utilização de imagens, entrada e saída, detecção de colisão, multiplayer e outras facilidades. Atualmente, além da engine básica, a M3GE implementa multi-player através de blue-tooh e importa modelos do Quake II. Estes últimos recursos não foram implementados por mim.    Arquitetura e desenvolvimento de um notificador de notícias (RSS) e e-mails que executa no System Tray para linux (KDE e Gnome) e Windows. Projeto similar ao GmailNotifier do google mas com mais abertura as preferências do usuário. Desenvolvido em Java com Swing e Rome.

   Lider de projeto e principal desenvolvedor durante o período. Trata-se de um conversor automático de linguagens de programação para shaders, de HLSL para GLSL. O foco do projeto é auxiliar os desenvolvedores de jogos a migrarem os seus jogos e aplicações gráficas do Windows para linux e MacOS. Projeto desenvolvido em C # no Mono com o Grammatica.    Líder de projeto, arquitetura e desenvolvimento deste Content Management System (CMS) baseado no Priki. É um CMS específico para o portal JavaFree.org, que ficou no ar entre 2005 e 2009. O projeto gerencia artigos, propostas de empregos, conteúdos abertos (wiki), enquetes e notícias. Comunica-se com o sistema de fóruns JavaBB. Desenvolvido em Java com Webwork 2 e Prevayler.
